Energy Assistance NJNG wants to connect qualified families with energy assistance programs to help manage their energy bills You may be eligible for free grants to help pay your natural gas bill, along with home energy improvement programs to help lower your energy usage.* Income guidelines are broad, providing access to energy assistance for even more of our customers. Deferred Payment Arrangements If you have an outstanding balance on your NJNG bill, we can help you catch up. Schedule interest-free payments to pay off a past-due balance in monthly increments.* We’re pleased to offer you several options to make paying your NJNG bill easier. We estimate your monthly charges when we’re unable to obtain a meter read of your natural gas usage. To help keep your bills accurate, you can submit your own meter read before your next scheduled bill date.
To accurately read your natural gas meter, follow these directions:
- 1. Read the dials from left to right. The dials’ hands move from zero to nine, and each dial rotates in the opposite direction of the one next to it.
- 2. When the needle of the dial is between two numbers, always choose the smaller number.
- 3. When the needle falls directly on a number, use the number before it if the needle to the right has not completed a full revolution and reached or passed zero.

Whether faced with temporary or unexpected circumstances or on a limited income, there are resources available to help pay your natural gas bill.
- • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) — provides income-eligible customers a credit directly to their energy bills.
- • Universal Service Fund (USF) — Provides income-eligible customers a monthly credit to their natural gas bill.
- • Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric (PAGE) — provides a one-time grant to eligible low- and moderate-income households to help restore service or reduce an outstanding balance.
- • New Jersey SHARES — provides eligible customers who do not qualify for other assistance programs a one-time grant to help pay their energy bill.
- • NJNG’s Gift of Warmth (GOW) — GOW provides customers with a one-time grant to help households experiencing unanticipated financial hardship pay their natural gas bill.

When a tenant’s service is scheduled for a turnoff, the account can be transferred to the landlord for a $15 account opening fee. There are three programs:
- • *Full-service Notification — The account is transferred to the landlord once a turnoff is scheduled because of a tenant’s request or delinquent account.
- • *Regular-service Notification — The account is transferred to the landlord after we receive the current renter’s turn-off request or until there is a new tenant.
- • Limited-service Notification — The landlord receives written notice when a service is scheduled to be turned off due to a tenant’s request or delinquent account. Service remains off until there is a new tenant OR the landlord enrolls in the Full- or Regular-service Notification program.
